About Sint Eustatius

Sint Eustatius (English: Saint Eustatius also known affectionately to the locals as Statia or Statius, is one of the islands that made up the Netherlands Antilles; it is in the northern, Leeward Islands portion of the West Indies, southeast of the Virgin Islands. In 1954 Sint Eustatius (Statia) became a part of the Netherlands Antilles along with Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba and Sint Maarten. As of October 10 2010 Statia will have a new constitutional status of special municipality within the Netherlands constitution.

Sint Eustatius is part of the inner arc of the Leeward Island chain, lying immediately to the northwest of Saint Kitts and Nevis and to the southeast of Saba. The island is named after the legendary Christian martyr Saint Eustace. The regional capital of Statia is Oranjestad. ( Please keep in mind that the Capital of Aruba is also Oranjestad.) If you are captivated by history, Sint Eustatius should be your first visit when coming to the caribbean. We are a 8.1 sq mile Island.

Statia was seen by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and claimed by many different nations over the next 150 years. In 1636 Sint Eustatius was colonized by the chamber of Zeeland and as of 1678 Statia fell under the direct command of The Dutch West Indian Company. Since The Island sold arms and ammunition to anyone willing to pay, it was one of the few places the Thirteen Colonies( present United States of America could buy weaponry. Because of the good trade relationship between Sint Eustatius and the United States, Sint Eustatius became the first international territory to acknowledge the United States when in 1776 commander Johannes de Graaff of Sint Eustatius decided to return the salute fire of the visiting American brigantine Andrew Doria by firing the cannons from Fort Oranje in Oranjestad.
